The State’s anti-discrimination authority, Anti-Discrimination NSW (ADNSW), has launched podcasts and videos as part of a new Workplace Adjustments Series. The videos and podcasts – which feature managers and staff with disability from across the NSW public service – tell personal stories and highlight the importance of workplace adjustments.
President of ADNSW Helen McKenzie said the Workplace Adjustments Series was a result of 12-months’ work with Disability Employee Network leaders and Diversity and Inclusion teams in the NSW public service.
“We are excited to share these videos and podcasts and contribute to the existing workplace adjustments projects that are already underway in NSW Government departments,” Ms McKenzie said.
“One in five people have a disability and not all disabilities are visible.
“Some people need adjustments at work to perform to the best of their ability and often workplace adjustments can be implemented simply and with no cost,” Ms McKenzie added.
Examples of workplace adjustments include flexible working hours, remote work options, changes to work premises and specialised hardware, software and equipment.
One of the project participants, Andrew Radnedge – a manager at the Department of Communities and Justice – said managers need to think about workplace adjustments before they even start hiring.
“You need to ensure that job advertisements encourage applicants to request adjustments if required.
“It’s about being inclusive from the very first advertisement and helping everyone to put their best foot forward when applying for a role,” Andrew said.
If you need adjustments at work, you should speak to your manager or employer. Diversity and Inclusion, Work Health and Safety, and Human Resources teams can also assist.
If you have issues accessing workplace adjustments or experience disability discrimination at work, contact Anti-Discrimination NSW to make a free, confidential enquiry or complaint. ADNSW may be able to help you and your employer to find a way of resolving the matter according to the law.
ADNSW can be contact on 1800 670 812 or via antidiscrimination.nsw.gov.au.
The new videos and podcasts can be accessed via the Workplace Adjustment Series page on the Anti-Discrimination NSW website.
