Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Nina, and I am a proud Polynesian-Samoan woman from Dharug Land.

I come from a big tight-knit family. I love my Rugby and I support the mighty Penrith Panthers and the Wallabies. I love learning about different cultures and trying out all their yummy food. I have a crazy obsession with H&M, and it doesn’t help that I now work near one!

Why did you join Anti-Discrimination NSW?

I joined in May 2022 and prior to this I was working as a Case Worker for Mission Australia. The reason I joined ADNSW is because I’m passionate about community and empowering those who have no voice in our society. I also see this job as a positive stepping stone to help me reach my career goals.

Can you describe your role?

My team and I are the first point of contact for members of the public. I respond to general enquiries via phone and email about the complaint's process and what is covered under the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977. I also process complaints of discrimination, victimisation, vilification and sexual harassment.

Another part of my role is to conduct preliminary investigations for complaints that require more information and I find this part of my work very interesting. When suitable, I also refer people to community legal centres and advocacy services for further assistance.

What do you like most about your job?

Firstly, I love that I work in a job that aligns with my personal values. I am huge on empowering others, and I love that this role allows me to empower and support the public, especially in times of distress.

I am from a culturally and linguistically diverse background and raised in Mount Druitt. I’ve found that a lot of people in my community aren’t fully aware or have access to the correct information when it comes to legal processes or just about the subject of discrimination in general. I love that the knowledge that I gain through my job not only empowers me in the professional space, but also personally.

What keeps you busy outside of work?

You will find me at the gym; I enjoy a good boxing class!

I watch and go to a lot of Rugby games with my family, and I also love TikTok.
