Craig* has been a case worker for five years. He has psoriatic arthritis and has had both knees replaced, as a result of which he experiences pain and discomfort when sitting.
About 65% of Craig’s work hours are spent sitting at a desk. Two years ago, he requested an assessment of his workspace, to see if anything could be done to reduce his pain and discomfort when sitting. This was done, but on a day when he was not present. Craig was told he would be getting a new desk and chair that were more comfortable and supportive, but two years later he is still waiting.
Craig was not aware of any process or contact in the department that he could access independently of his immediate manager. He says he’s had no communication from anyone about why the equipment has not yet been provided. Whenever he asks his manager about it, verbally or by email, he gets a verbal response of “don’t worry, it’s under control”.
Craig believes managers might think things like furniture are “coming out of their own pocket.” He feels frontline staff would benefit from more information.
