Membership application rejected

Lachlan* has autism spectrum disorder. Lachlan applied to be a member of a registered club and to compete in a competition. His applications were rejected, and Lachlan felt that this was because of his disability.
Lachlan lodged a complaint with ADNSW.
At the conciliation conference, the club denied that they had declined Lachlan’s applications because of his disability. The club said that Lachlan and his family had been involved in the club for many years and that there had been significant conflict between Lachlan’s family and other club members. The club also said that Lachlan’s behaviour had caused problems at past club activities.
The club said it had other members with a disability similar to Lachlan’s. It provided enough information to show that it had declined Lachlan’s applications because of his behaviour and previous conflicts involving other family members, and not because of his disability.
