Miscommunication on support services

February 2012

Collette* has a psychiatric disability. She felt she was discriminated against when the disability support unit of her university did not provide her with an adequate level of service to enable her to continue her studies.

Collette lodged a complaint with ADNSW.

The university said that it had tried to implement an appropriate level of support, but miscommunication meant that the consultation was delayed, and Collette withdrew from the course.

At the conciliation conference, the university agreed to review its procedures for providing disability support and provide Collette with a statement of regret and a payment of $2,000.
