Amputee refused drinks

September 2013

Gillian* is a below-the-knee amputee and wears a prosthesis. She was refused service of alcohol because a staff member saw she was unsteady on her feet and assumed she was drunk. When Gillian complained to the club’s management and told them she only had one leg, a staff member laughed at her.

Gillian lodged a complaint with ADNSW.

The matter was resolved when the club gave a written undertaking to conduct staff training on discrimination issues.
