Amira*, who is deaf in one ear, enrolled in a vocational course and let her trainer know about her hearing disability. After experiencing distressing treatment during the course, Amira lodged a disability discrimination complaint with ADNSW.
Amira said that during an assessment task, the trainer yelled at her in a loud abusive tone, saying: “What are you doing, are you Deaf?”. She said this embarrassed her in front of other students and made her cry. Later, when Amira’s husband spoke to the trainer about the incident, the trainer said he could no longer teach her.
Amira asked for a refund for the course, but was only offered half of the cost, which she declined.
ADNSW investigated her complaint and arranged a conciliation conference via MS Teams.
Before the meeting took place, the training provider offered Amira a full refund through ADNSW to resolve the complaint. Amira accepted the offer and the matter was settled.
