A Day in the Life of Julie Communications Officer, Anti-Discrimination NSW

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I joined ADNSW last month as a part-time communications officer.
I grew up in the Blue Mountains, and still love living up there. I studied Arts, Law and Professional Communications at university and have enjoyed a range of different communications roles in local and state government over the last 20 years.
Why did you join Anti-Discrimination NSW?
When this role came up I was excited to have the opportunity to work with an organisation that provides support and advice directly to people in the community, when they most need it.
Human rights law was an area of my studies that particularly interested me, which made this role especially attractive. I expected the work would be interesting, involving real people and issues that really affect their lives – and I haven’t been disappointed.
Can you describe your role?
I help with communications, including this monthly e-newsletter. I’m very new to the role, still learning who everyone is and what they do.
I’m excited that I'll be creating articles and case studies that help people understand anti-discrimination law, and what their options are if they experience discrimination. I’m also looking forward to helping the team to continue improving our website and social media, so as many people as possible are aware of our role and services.
What do you like most about your job?
The best thing about being a communications professional is being able to make a living doing what I love - storytelling, writing, editing and proofreading. I’m especially passionate about plain language communications, making information about complex processes or subjects clear and accessible for everyone who wants or needs it.
While I’m new to the job here, I already love the variety of topics, people and stories that it brings each day.
I always find that good communications teams, no matter how big or small, have a great energy, with people bouncing their ideas off each other and bringing out each other’s strengths. Even more so in an organisation like this that genuinely values communication and has it at the centre of everything they do, not an afterthought or separate function.
I love it when communications I'm working on are directly connected to what people are talking to the enquiries team about, or what's currently in the media. It feels relevant and dynamic.
What keeps you busy outside of work?
I have a 12-year-old daughter and we live with my partner in what is pretty much a zoo! With a dog, four cats, chickens, assorted birds and a guinea pig, there’s always someone wanting to play or be fed, and never any risk of feeling lonely! I love exploring our local bushland and cafes, and I also read a lot, so it’s handy that my hobby is running a second-hand book sale.
