ADNSW launches workplace adjustment case studies

Published 5 December 2023

Anti-Discrimination NSW (ADNSW) has launched 12 written case studies as part of its Workplace Adjustments Series, adding to videos and podcasts launched in September 2022.

The case studies are deidentified personal experiences shared by diverse staff with disability from across the NSW public sector. They highlight the importance of reasonable adjustments to remove barriers in the workplace that hinder people with disability from ‘getting on with the job’. Examples of workplace adjustments include flexible working hours, remote work options and specialised technology or equipment.

ADNSW Acting Executive Manager Jackie Lyne said the project supports work being done by the Public Service Commission and other NSW Government departments to improve workplace adjustment practices.

“One in 5 Australians has a disability, and the proportion is increasing as our population ages. Not all disabilities are visible.

“Everyone has strengths and weaknesses and things that they need to perform at their best. Many workplace adjustments can be implemented simply and with little or no cost,” Ms Lyne added.

“These stories provide insights into challenges that people with disability face daily, and the simple, inexpensive solutions that can make a huge difference”, Ms Lyne said.

“A common theme that emerges is that respect, flexibility, open mindedness, and communication go a long way. Effective managers play a vital role, as do appropriate training.

“It’s about working together, talking to people about their needs and realising that those needs might be different on different days or as the years pass."

One participant who is blind said people with disability often have ‘superpowers’ that can be a huge benefit to their teams, employers and customers. Hers are “a great memory, attention span and ability to focus on what’s really important in a situation.”

If you need adjustments at work, speak to your manager or employer. Diversity and Inclusion, Work Health and Safety, and Human Resources teams can also assist.

NSW Government managers and employees can visit the Public Service Commission website or contact their Diversity & Inclusion, Work, Health & Safety or HR teams for more workplace adjustment information, and may also wish to reach out to their Disability Employee Network (DEN).

If you have trouble accessing workplace adjustments or experience disability discrimination at work, please contact Anti-Discrimination NSW on 1800 670 812 or visit antidiscrimination.nsw.gov.au.
