Denied entry to hotel due to race

June 2020

Haoran* and Kai* were denied entry to a hotel by a security guard. They felt that they had been denied entry because of their race. Haoran and Kai lodged a complaint of race discrimination with ADNSW, against the venue and the employer of the security guard.

A conciliation conference was held but the matter was not resolved. Haoran and Kai then requested that their complaints be referred to the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal for hearing.

After hearing evidence, the Tribunal agreed with Haoran and Kai’s version of events and awarded $7,500 to each as compensation. The Tribunal also ordered an apology to be published on the venue’s Facebook page.
