Amara* resides in NSW on an Australian visa. She applied for a particular pre-paid phone plan which includes international calls with a telecommunications provider.
This application was denied by the provider because she did not drive to have an Australian driver’s license or was a citizen to have an Australian passport which were the only accepted forms of identification for that plan.
Amara lodged a complaint of race discrimination with ADNSW.
The telecommunications provider advised ADNSW that they are working to improve and update their system so in the future they will be able to accept other forms of identification.
After discussions with the provider, Amara’s application was approved. She was provided with a discount on her phone bill for six months. Amara accepted that offer which resolved the complaint.
