ADNSW held a focus group on 9 October with 23 members of Herself Together to discuss race discrimination in the Chinese community and their experiences of reporting it.
Herself Together is a non-profit organisation. It was founded early this year to empower professional women with Chinese cultural backgrounds along their career journey.
Lulu, founder of Herself Together said the focus group was a fantastic opportunity to discuss discrimination these women have encountered.
“I would like to give a special thank you to Chloe and Shabnam from ADNSW and our committee members, who helped to schedule, organise, and hold the webinar,” Lulu said.
“Zero tolerance is the attitude we have for all discrimination and the support from ADNSW provides a perfect way for us to identify discrimination and report it.”
During the focus group, participants predominantly discussed micro aggression and underlying racism at work, and the need to increase workplace anti-racism awareness. ADNSW staff explained our services and encouraged members of the Chinese community to make a complaint if they have faced discrimination.
Consulting with CALD communities helps us to understand some of the barriers to reporting race discrimination to our service and gives us an opportunity to explain the complaints process more completely.
Feedback from CALD communities can help inform our service delivery, and through our engagement we can begin to build community confidence to lodge complaints and help to eliminate race discrimination in NSW.
ADNSW will continue to conduct multicultural focus groups this year with Arabic, Hindi, Korean and Vietnamese speaking communities in NSW.
