A Day in the Life of Afrah Communications Officer

I am a first-generation Australian Muslim woman with a Sri Lankan ethnic heritage. I was born and raised in Sydney and could not imagine moving anywhere else.

I am a humble wife and mother of a cheeky three year old boy – Yahya.

My name means joy/celebration/happiest in Arabic and I try to impart this in my life every day. 

I joined ADNSW to work for an organisation that makes a difference to the lives of people who have experienced discrimination.

I decided to wear my hijab when I was in the latter years of primary school and, unfortunately from that point, I faced discrimination on many occasions. I now feel like the work I do is meaningful and is in an area that I am passionate about.

I am a Communications Officer for ADNSW and job share with my colleague Gillian.

We now have a new website which I will be maintaining and uploading relevant, new and interesting content. I also have a profound love of social media and look forward to assisting and developing the ADNSW brand on new ADNSW social media channels. 

I have a bachelors and master’s degree in communications. Using this knowledge and experience, I love being able to tailor messages and information for the public in an easy to read and understand manner. 

I love reading books – romance mixed with science fiction or fantasy is my favourite. Lockdown in Sydney has me revisiting my tweenhood favourite ‘Violet Eyes’ on my Kindle.

Additionally, apart from motherhood, I love watching crime related documentaries and TEDx conferences. I recently watched a talk on intermittent fasting which was fascinating!
