October 2021
I came from a marketing and communications background having worked at media publisher SBS and advertising agency Ogilvy. Now I am the Acting Manager, Community Engagement at ADNSW.
Although I have worked in different industries, what doesn’t change is that my work always involves communicating and engaging with multicultural communities as well as vulnerable communities.
As a migrant myself, I am all about engaging with our diverse communities in culturally appropriate and authentic ways.
Before I joined ADNSW, I worked on a few federal, state and local government campaigns including the Census, 2021 NSW Local Government Election, and South Australia and Queensland government COVID-19 campaigns. One of my most memorable campaigns was the NSW Department of Communities and Justice’s domestic violence campaign. I had an opportunity to work with multicultural communities to empower women from various cultural backgrounds to speak out and seek help if they experienced domestic and family violence.
Working for justice and giving a voice to vulnerable communities has always been my passion so as soon as I saw this temporary role become available, I knew I had to apply.
My role supports and leads a team of communications and community engagement officers who raise awareness of discrimination in NSW. We collaborate with other teams internally such as Enquiries and Conciliation as well as Governance and Advice to identify new and emerging discrimination issues in NSW.
I support our community engagement team to deliver strategic community engagement plans targeting multicultural, LGBTIQ+, youth and people with disabilities.
Since I started, we have also been busy with COVID-related communications to ensure that the people of NSW are aware of COVID-related discrimination and know to reach out to us if they believe they’ve experienced it. The team also launched our brand new user-centric website; I encourage you to check it out!
The best part of my job is getting to work with my amazing colleagues in the Community Engagement team. We have such a good team culture; it is a place where we can bring our whole self to work. We keep each other challenged yet supported at the same time. Team members are experts in their fields, and I am learning constantly from them.
I am a very active person outside of work. You will find me exploring nature and doing different outdoor activities every weekend.
I am also an aspiring blogger writing in Chinese. I enjoy sharing my own experiences and learnings on my video blog to inspire other young Chinese migrant women like me. I recently did a Ted Talk style speech to an audience of young professional Chinese women (pre-lockdown). Seeing people get inspiration from my storytelling encourages me to do more!
