Served last at bank

June 2022

John*, a Caucasian man, went to a bank to open a new savings account. He was asked to wait while the bank employee, who was of Indian appearance, finished serving another customer.

While John was waiting, two customers of Indian appearance also arrived at the bank. The bank employee attended to these customers first even though John was next in line. John complained to the bank and later his credit card was cancelled.

John lodged a complaint of race discrimination and victimisation with ADNSW.

While the bank did not agree that John had been discriminated against or victimised, the complaint was resolved in conciliation. John received $1,250, a statement of regret from the bank and his credit card account was reinstated.
