Athanasia* is a transgender woman who worked at a retail company.
Her employer referred to Athanasia as a ‘weirdo’ and her position was made redundant. However, Athanasia later observed that she was the only employee made redundant and her position was readvertised. She felt singled out for being transgender.
Athanasia lodged a complaint of transgender discrimination with ADNSW.
At conciliation, the matter was resolved when the company agreed to pay Athanasia $4,000 and review its anti-discrimination policies.
