Childcare refused to recognise transgender mother

November 2019

Dana* is a transgender woman with children attending a childcare centre.

The organisation refused to recognise Dana’s parenting status and kept records with her former name against her express wishes.

The organisation also failed to intervene appropriately when Dana and her children were harassed by childcare workers in the organisation.

After several internal complaints to childcare management, Dana lodged a complaint of transgender discrimination with ADNSW.

ADNSW contacted both parties who agreed to meet before conciliation. At conciliation, Dana and the childcare management reported that all matters had been resolved.
