Birth certificate kept only for transgender member

August 2014

Carmen*, a transgender woman applied for membership of a women’s only sport centre.

She offered to show the centre a copy of her birth certificate, as this was their usual practice.

However, the centre’s management insisted that she provide a photocopy that they would keep, which she felt was inappropriate and not what other members were required to do.

Carmen made a complaint of transgender discrimination to ADNSW.

At conciliation, Carmen said she was no longer interested in joining the centre, due to the problems that had occurred.

To resolve the complaint, the centre agreed to pay Carmen compensation for her hurt and humiliation.
