Property denied to couple with young children

March 2017

Danny* and Alicia* are a couple with five young children. They applied for a rental property though a real estate agent. The couple were refused the rental property and felt this was because of the age of their children.

Danny and Alicia lodged a complaint of age discrimination with ADNSW against the owner of the property and real estate agent.

At conciliation, the owner agreed that he had not wanted to rent the property to the family because he did not think the property was suitable for young children.

The owner and real estate agent agreed to pay $5,000 Danny and Alicia to resolve the complaint.
