Carers benefit from online education session on their rights at work

ADNSW is committed to educating carers about anti-discrimination legislation so they can recognise discrimination in paid employment and know where to report it.

In association with Carers NSW, the peak non-government organisation that focuses on improving the lives of carers, Assistant Community Engagement Officer Claire Williams recently delivered a webinar on carers' rights.

Under the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, it is against the law for an employer to discriminate against a person because of their responsibilities as a carer.

Discrimination is when someone has been treated unfairly by their employer because of their responsibilities as a carer compared to someone in the same or similar circumstances who does not have responsibilities as they do. The law protects people who support or care for their children or a family member or for a child/ adult for whom they are a guardian.

The information session highlighted the role of ADNSW, the process of making a complaint and some of the rights that apply to carers who are employed in the workforce. Carers were also encouraged to make an enquiry if they had felt they experienced discrimination.
