How exemptions should be used

Seeking an exemption or certification under the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW), particularly in employment, should be part of a broader strategy to achieve inclusion and diversity.

This might involve steps such as:

• Developing formal strategies such as a Reconciliation Action Plan, Diversity and Inclusion Plan or Gender Equity Strategy
• Understanding the barriers faced by your target group
• Eliminating bias from recruitment and promotion activities
• Using inclusive advertising and diverse media
• Building cultural knowledge and supports within your organisation.
