The State’s anti-discrimination authority, Anti-Discrimination NSW (ADNSW) has launched new inclusive recruitment resources: a tip sheet and videos for public sector managers to help make recruitment processes more accessible and inclusive for people from culturally diverse backgrounds.
The resources are the latest step in ADNSW’s inclusive recruitment research project. It follows a literature review published in December 2023 and a research report Barriers and enablers of recruitment for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds published in March 2024.
President of ADNSW, Helen McKenzie said the new resources, which were developed in collaboration with managers and culturally diverse job seekers, offer simple and effective strategies to improve recruitment processes and find top talent.
“NSW is proudly diverse with one in every four people born overseas and one in two people having a parent born overseas,” Helen McKenzie said.
“While the NSW Public Service is committed to having a diverse workforce that represents the communities it serves, we do receive reports of race discrimination in recruitment, and we know that many workplaces still don’t reflect the diversity of our state.”
“We developed these resources to support hiring managers to make recruitment processes more accessible and inclusive for people from culturally diverse backgrounds,” Ms McKenzie said.
“Simple things like ensuring your interview panel is culturally diverse, being aware of unconscious bias, and being welcoming and encouraging can go a long way towards making your recruitment process more inclusive and effective,” Ms McKenzie added.
The videos give hiring managers valuable insights into barriers faced by culturally diverse candidates in the recruitment process and offer effective strategies to attract, assess and onboard diverse talent.
The tip sheet offers 10 tips for public sector hiring managers:
