ADNSW launches Inclusive Recruitment research report

Published 20 March 2024

Anti-Discrimination NSW (ADNSW) has launched a new research report looking at how public service recruitment processes are experienced by people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

The report, Barriers and enablers of recruitment for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, is based on months of qualitative and quantitative research with culturally diverse job seekers, hiring managers, HR/Talent Acquisition advisors and best practice employers. It includes key insights and strategic recommendations for public service employers. It is the latest step in ADNSW’s Inclusive Recruitment project and follows a literature review published in December 2023.

President Helen McKenzie said the report considers strategies that employers can use to make recruitment processes more accessible and inclusive, and explores how public service agencies can attract more culturally diverse job applicants.

“NSW is strongly diverse and multicultural, with one in every four people born overseas and one in two people having a parent born overseas,” Ms McKenzie said.

“While the NSW public service is committed to having a diverse workforce that represents the communities it serves, we do receive reports of race discrimination in recruitment, and we know that many workplaces still don’t reflect the diversity of our state.

“We undertook this research to understand the barriers and enablers that people from culturally diverse backgrounds experience during recruitment processes – so public sector agencies and organisations more broadly can make their recruitment processes more accessible and inclusive.

“The next stage of this project will see us co-design a series of resources to support the implementation of inclusive recruitment practices within workplaces,” Ms McKenzie added.

Individuals who experience discrimination can contact Anti-Discrimination NSW on 1800 670 812 for free confidential information about their rights and how to make a complaint.
