Anti-Discrimination NSW launches new LGBTQA conversion practices ban resource for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities

Published 19 February 2025

Anti‑Discrimination NSW has launched a new video made for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, sharing clear and culturally safe information about the LGBTQA conversion practices ban and the support available to mob.

The video features the voice of proud Indigenous actress Steph Tisdell and was developed in collaboration with 13YARN.

LGBTQA conversion practices are harmful practices which seek to change or suppress an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity. They are sometimes referred to as ‘gay conversion’ practices or ‘conversion therapy’. Evidence shows that conversion practices are dangerous and damaging.

The conversion practices ban came into force in NSW on 4 April 2025.

Acting President of the Anti‑Discrimination Board of NSW, Chris D’Aeth, said the new video was created to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have access to information that is respectful, accessible and grounded in lived experience.

“Conversion practices can cause deep and lasting harm,” Mr D’Aeth said.

“This video was developed so Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities can understand their rights in a way that feels safe, clear and culturally appropriate and know that support through 13YARN and other services is available.”

The video forms part of broader work to raise awareness of the conversion practices ban and to help people seek information or support without fear or judgement.

Individuals who have experienced conversion practices can contact Anti‑Discrimination NSW on
1800 670 812 for free and confidential information. Callers can ask to speak with an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff member if they wish.

Reports can be made to Anti‑Discrimination NSW about conversion practices that occurred on or after
4 April 2025. Formal complaints may lead to conciliation between the people involved, targeted education or further investigation.
